Dominoes
I’ve always loved dominoes for how perfectly satisfying they are from a sensory standpoint. So heavy in my hands and smooth, with curved edges, That satisfying click of one against the other, and of course, the reliable thrill of toppling a run. (Too bad “domino effect” has such negative connotations.) Even the name for the dots is perfect - a palindrome - PIP!
But this set of mono prints is a rejection of perfectionism, a quality that’s critical in my day job as an editorial professional and creative director — clarity, accuracy and legibility and all that. Now, the rules of play are uneven shapes, ragged edges from paint building up on the stencils, misaligned squares, uneven fields of black. At first I fought them. But as I got deeper into the series, I began to celebrate them. After all, imperfections make us more interesting, more knowable.
Dominoes are original mono prints, acrylic on paper, $75 unframed. (Ask me about pricing for multiples!) Contrast and brightness variations are in digital images only. The entire set is printed on the same crisp white paper with the same color of black acrylic paint
